SSL Security

What is SSL and What Does it do for Me?
SSL is an acronym for "secure sockets layer", a protocol developed by Netscape for transmitting data over the Internet. In a nutshell, SSL encrypts any data sent by you over the Internet through an SSL connection, and our server reads it by using a private key. What this really means is that your data - be it credit card information or other personal data - is turned into a type of code that can only be decoded with the private key or password.

How Do I Know the Browser Page is Secure?
With most versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer, a locked padlock will appear in the bottom toolbar of the browser. With newer Netscape browsers, a similar padlock will appear at the bottom. Otherwise, you may notice that the browser screen is outlined in blue. Still can't tell? Don't despair. Check your URL to see if it begins with https:// This is another sign that the page is secure. You can also get more details in Netscape by clicking View, then Page Info. This will have further information on the security of the document. To do the same thing in Internet Explorer, just click File, then Properties.

How Secure is the Internet....Really?
Well, it's safe. Imagine you were on the phone giving your credit card number to a merchant in exchange for some product or service. This is pretty standard stuff, right? I think we've all done it. Now. Imagine someone was listening in on the call and got your credit card information. This person can begin using your card immediately, right? Same goes for merchants in the stores. If someone takes the carbon from your credit card slip, they're in business. On the Internet, this person would not only have to get the information, which is much more difficult to do, but they'd also have to break the encryption code by hand, because we have the only key!

So you see, Internet commerce is a pretty darn secure way to do business. At least we think so. You're much more likely to have your information stolen by an easier method (like purse snatching) than by shopping online. In fact, you're probably more prone to getting struck by lightning or even winning the lottery! But we understand your need to make your own decision on Internet security - we just hope you'll make the logical choice: Take advantage of your Compaq Presario Points and shop at the Compaq "Select Your Software" store today.
